At the heart of any good subwoofer is the active drive unit itself. This defines the limit of what a quality subwoofer can do. Ideally it should have large excursion (long throw), low distortion (ability to stop and start accurately), large power handling, high mass, a rigid frame assembly that doesn't move, and an enormously powerful magnet/motor system. Large volumes of air must be energized .
Industry standard single magnet systems are inadequate . Instead Source Technologies has incorporated dual stacked magnets, having more than twice the magnetic force and excursion of typical woofers. Commonly used glued on back plates (they hold the magnets in place) had to be replaced by more rigid bolt on plates that can not "move".
